The original kalamkari saree was recognized by the Mughals who promoted it to the provinces of Golconda and Coromandel. This attracted more craftsmen employing it in the style and as a result, the style evolved. During the reign of Golconda, it flourished at Machilipatnam in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh and was subsequently promoted in the 18th century where it took the form of clothing.

Some families in Andra Pradesh still practice this art form and is now a popular saree style across the country. Due to its unique representations of ethics, it also adds a cultural and ethnic touch to clothing almost as if one wears one’s culture with the pride of being an Indian and standing up for the culture.

The technique is also time-consuming and requires a meticulous procedure involving twenty-three steps from bleaching the fabric, softening it to drying and washing. As printed kalamkari saree is all about printing with a tamarind pen from the start, it was surprising that it started to lose its luster. However, due to the industrial revolution and increasing improvements in machinery, and advancements in printing, the style has a new face and is as popular as it always has been.

Kalamkari sarees feature traditional simplicity, elaborate themes, crisp details, and attractive designs in a multitude of bright and pleasant hues. Kalamkari emerges nicely on a large number of fabrics such as silk, cotton, sico art silks such as georgette, chiffon, Supernet, crepe silk, and others. With the vegetable dyes used, the colors are fast and long-lasting.
